Impro Scott Visiting Team

In 2009 the history of Impro Scott Visiting Team began. A partnership between University of Arts from Tirgu-Mures and Edinburgh’s College (at that time: Edinburgh's Telford College) generated a projected that lasted for eleven editions. The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic put an end, for now, to this educational and cultural exchange between, at least, three nationalities and two countries.

Part of Theatre-Directing master’s annual programme (tutored by the Romanian theatre director, Theodor-Cristian Popescu), the project was designed, on one hand, to familiarize the Romanian theatre school with the devising theatre technique, a method so specific to British Theatre and its educational system. Having an artistic background in this field, lecturer Scott Johnston’s workshops (regarding Augusto Boal’s technique and the main principles of devising theatre) were the appropriate method to fulfill this objective. Another goal of the project revolved around the cultural and artistic exchange between people of, at least, three nationalities.

Over the years, Impro Scott Visiting Team adapted so that it involved even Theatre Studies students (a programme designed mainly for the theoretical study of theatre). Impro Scott Visiting Team’s most recent editions transformed into a buffet of workshops that gathered at University of Arts various experts in the field of theatre. These well-known artists conducted workshops for the students involved in the project.

It’s tenth edition was celebrated with a theatre performance rehearsed during a week’s time. The cast of 10 (Ten), devised by Scott Johnston and Fiona Miller, included Scottish, Romanian and Hungarian students and was meant to mark that year’s anniversary edition.

More than 200 Scottish students from Edinburgh’s College worked over the years with almost 500 University of Arts’ students. Impro Scott Visiting Team turned out to be more than a theatrical exchange programme, as it generated an important cultural and social exchange between people of different nationalities. The profile of University of Arts from Tirgu-Mures (with its two faculties - the Faculty of Arts in Romanian and Faculty of Arts in Hungarian) certainly contributed to this state of things.
